I wants to show how enormous modern constructions works are, which become clear in contrast with the miniature forms in which I presents them. “During the exposition, I saw that the children thought the miniature nuclear power plant, mega farm and Bijlmer apartment building were completely normal and even fun and didn’t know anything about the political and societal aspects. I love this contrast! The innocent world of children as opposed to the serious, large-scale (and at times painful) adult world.” I made the blocks using a laser and 3D printer, a technique that received much acclaim in the architecture world. I has even been discussing the possibilities of putting my work on the market as real toys.
Research & Inspiration by critical blocks
My Flat, Mega Farm, Power Plant and Highway are designs that came from my research into public space and architecture and the idealized version of both in toy modelling. On the basis of my research I selected a number of buildings that epitomize today’s zeitgeist. I transformed these architectural types into toy blocks. In doing so I have two objectives. The first is to shed a light on the excessive nature of contemporary large scale architecture – the mega factory – by using the poor and abstract form language of toy blocks. My second objective is to make full use of the contrast between the harshness of contemporary architecture and the illusory children’s world of friendliness and unlimited possibilities cultivated by adults.
